What is an out-of-pocket expense?

An out-of-pocket expense is incurred when you're charged more for medical or hospital services than the amount you get back from Medicare (if you're an Australian resident) and your health cover. It’s therefore not something you can claim for.

For hospital claims, the hospital and treating specialist should advise you in writing of the potential out-of-pocket expenses prior to your hospital admission - this is called informed financial consent. Not all specialists will provide this, so be sure to ask for it. Remember that you’re also responsible for making sure you understand all the potential costs before undergoing hospital treatment.

We recommend that you call us on 13 49 60 before you go to hospital to check your cover and potential out-of-pocket expenses, as you may end up having to pay more than just your excess.
