What is an excess?

An excess is the amount you elect to pay towards your hospital admission before we pay a benefit. Choosing a higher excess will reduce your Hospital premium (although you’ll pay more up front if you’re admitted to hospital). The amount of your excess and the number of times you need to pay it per calendar year varies depending on your cover. Check your Product Fact Sheet via the self-service portal to find out what excess is payable for your policy and refer to the Policy Booklet for more information about excesses.

It’s important to note, if you change your cover to a lower excess and are still serving waiting periods, your previous higher hospital excess may apply until those waiting periods have been served.

Good news for families: If you have a Family or Single Parent Family policy, you won't pay an excess if your children (up to 21 years of age) have to go to hospital.

Before going to hospital, you should always check your policy’s hospital excess - which you can do via the self-service portal or by calling us on 13 49 60.
