Why is home maintenance not covered?

Home insurance is designed to cover the costs of unexpected damage. Gradual damage to your property due to lack of maintenance (for example rusting pipes, seepage or damage from faulty fixtures) usually isn't covered because it could have been avoided with regular maintenance. It's important to keep your property in good condition so that if an insured event does happen, the damage is limited and the property is repairable.
