Finding the right fit with New Balance

Having your running shoes fitted properly and professionally is the way to go because it will help to optimise your performance and help you to get the best out of your footwear. New Balance have been the pioneers and leaders in fits because of their long standing belief in fitting all foot types. New Balance first showed this in 1960 with a shoe called the Trackster, which came in multiple fit options. This allowed them to talk to a range of different people with different shaped feet.
Running shoes are made in many different shapes and sizes. A men’s standard fit is D and women’s is B. There are narrower and wider options than those as well.
There are a few aspects to consider when you’re getting fitted for running shoes:
  • When you get measured, usually, one foot will be bigger than the other. It is important to make sure you pick your size off your biggest foot. Remember not all shoes fit the same.
  • When the shoes are on your feet, make sure that there is a thumbnail worth of space at the front of the shoe. You do not want your toes touching the end.
  • You want your foot to sit firmly in the heel too. If the shoe is slipping at the back, try a lock lace technique, which by using extra loops, can secure your heel in place. If it is still slipping, then the fit is not right for you.
  • You should also check the mesh in the forefoot. Rub your thumb from left to right across the top of your toes. If the mesh bunches up, then the shoe is too wide. If it does not move at all, then the shoe is too narrow.
A correctly fitted shoe can be the difference between miles of comfortable running and all the blisters and blackened toenails you could possibly hope for.
